The Listening Room
Where sound keeps the deeper record
Music has never felt incidental to me.
It's one of the ways I read a room, a season, a city, a memory, a person.
Some songs explain more in three minutes than a full page ever could.
Some voices carry strange weather in them that few have experienced.
Some records sharpen a mood.
Some steady it.

The Listening Room is where I keep track of what sound
reveals, restores, stirs up, or refuses to let disappear.

This room is for music with consequence.
Songs that change the air.
Records that hold memory.
Voices with grain in them paired with rhythms that drag truth to the surface.
This isn't a place for algorithm bait, disposable playlists, or whatever else happens to be popular with the masses at the moment.
It's for work with shape, nerve, atmosphere, and an afterlife.

Music is one of the oldest ways people carry
sorrow,
pleasure,
anger,
grit,
wit,
longing,
hunger,
devotion,
loneliness,
&
survival
without reducing any of it.
It gives form to what might otherwise stay formless inside a person.
It can
sharpen a memory,
dignify a mood,
deepen a room,
or
even return a person to themselves without asking permission from language first.
That matters to me.

This house is not a music site, but music is most definitely in its bloodstream.
Blues teaches endurance without self-pity.
Jazz teaches timing, tension, release, intelligence, mischief, and style.
Other sounds arrive too, as they earn their place.
What matters isn't the label for me.
What matters is whether the music has any life in it.

What you'll find here are my listening notes,
artists I deem worth returning to again & again,
records for certain hours,
weather systems,
and seasons of life,
as well as writing that treats all music
as more than mere entertainment.

Sometimes the room will recommend.
Sometimes it will interpret.
Sometimes it will simply point to a song and let it say what it came to say.
Not everything worth knowing comes in argument.
Some of it comes in phrasing, tone, timing, breath, brass, wood, static, silence...
and a note bent just enough to tell the truth.

Inside this room, the listening breaks into a few distinct corners.
Each one holds a different kind of sound, mood, and return.
